She was the wife of Oceanus, the earth-encircling, fresh-water stream, and the mother of the Rivers, the nymphs of springs, streams and fountains, and the Clouds. Tethys fed her children's springs with the waters of Okeanos drawn through subterranean acquifers. Her name is from the Greek word têthê meaning "nurse" or "grandmother".
Tethys, a highly favoured daughter and now Mother in Heaven, gave herself to the Ocean-stream. She is described by late classical poets as the sea personified and was equated with Thalassa.
