The 1560's marked a turning point in the records of the world's navigation realm. Venetian mapmaking went on fire with leading cartographers of the day producing a renowned bespoke atlas. Publisher Antonio Lafreri made the finest example, a 2 volume compilation called the Lafreri-Doria Atlas of 1570. This magnificent book contains 186 printed and manuscript maps and in 2005 sold at Sotheby's in London for the princely sum of £ 1,464,000 Mapmaking not only revealed the world as it was known it revealed the pathways of the mind in traversing land and sea. The conceptual framework of how the world was seen and organized in this dimension gives us a pattern for expansion. Enhanced by expert silk weavers from Lucca, Venice produced some of the most notable velvets with motifs charged by influential touchpoints around the globe. Venetian archive In 1431 a Venetian merchant ship from Crete ran into a storm in the English Channel and Captain Pietro Querini with only a few men made it to shore.... let the traveller enjoy!
