.The Bonneville Salt Flats covers what was once part of the floor of the ancient, freshwater Lake Bonneville that gave beauty and nourishing refreshment to western Utah, Nevada, Idaho and Wyoming during the last Ice Age, over 15,000 years ago. Lake Bonneville shorelines can be seen as flat wave-cut benches or terraces on the sides of the Silver Island Mountains to the north-northwest of the salt flats.

The Bonneville Salt Flats and the Great Salt Lake are remnants of ancient Lake Bonneville. Wind and water combine to create the flat surface of salt. Each winter, a shallow layer of standing water floods the surface of the salt flats. During spring and summer, the water slowly evaporates while winds smooth the surface into a vast, nearly perfect flat plain. The salt crust volume is estimated at 147 million tons.

A place of incomparable beauty, the Bonneville Salt Flats stretches over 47 square miles and is known as the fastest place on earth, where speed records are set on a sublime straightaway that shows the curvature of the globe.
